RICHMOND, Va., May 14, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Virginia Baptist State Convention, Inc. (The VBSC) is hosting hundreds of Baptist clergy, laymen and congregants from various churches during its 145th Annual Session in Richmond, Virginia this week, May 14 - 17, 2012.

"This is our 145th Annual Session, and we haven't left a spare moment in our programming. What a glorious time we'll have in Richmond this week, a city that always treats us well," said Dr. Leonard N. Smith, President of The VBSC.

Highlights this week include a free youth event showcasing local and statewide mime, liturgical dance and musical talent; a free concert featuring the vocals of world renowned actor, Reverend Clifton Davis from the sitcom "Amen" and The VBSC Mass Choir, and a ticketed black tie banquet with keynote speaker Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson, Chairman of the Boards of the National Action Network and Virginia Union University with guest artist Minister Merlon Devine, Gospel Saxophonist.

Dr. Leonard N. Smith, who serves as president, will give his final address and the convention will elect and install a new president. Among many other program highlights, Smith will also launch his new book "We Need to Talk - Saying What We Need to Say Without Hurting Each Other." Details about the book can be found at www.LeonardNSmith.com.

"I'm excited about this year's Annual Session because we will begin a new chapter by electing and installing a new president. When I became president, our previous president, Dr. A. Lincoln James, Jr. of Trinity Baptist Church, Richmond, passed a great legacy on me. I now have the honor of doing the same. New leadership always brings new hope and vision. I'm certain that our new president will take the convention even further," said Smith.

The Annual Session will be held at the Richmond Downtown Marriott, 500 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219. Additional details about the event can be found on the Convention's Website at www.TheVBSC.org
