Pro-Life Activists Laud Court Decision to Set Parental Notification Rules

Contact: Joseph Scheidler, Pro-Life Action League, 773-777-2900, 312-965-1030 cell

CHICAGO, Sept. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- "The Illinois Supreme Court's action Monday may finally rescue Illinois from its notorious position as the abortion dumping ground of the midwest," said Joseph M. Scheidler, National Director of the Pro-Life Action League.

"Illinois has become a target state for minors from surrounding states who are seeking to avoid their own states' parental notice and parental consent laws. We are the only state in the midwest that does not require some kind of parental involvement in a teenage girl's decision to have an abortion," said Scheidler. "And yet, it is the girl's parents who are most intimately concerned with her health and well being."

The Illinois Supreme Court announced on Monday, Sept. 18, that they would proceed as requested by Attorney General Joe Birkett, to promulgate the rules for judicial bypass in order to lift the federal injunction and allow the Parental Notice bill to go into effect.

"We are relieved that the Illinois Supreme Court has finally agreed to draft the rules for the Illinois Parental Notice Act," said Joseph M. Scheidler, National Director of the Pro-Life Action League. "This will give Illinois parents the involvement they should have in the healthcare choices their minor daughters make."

"Our sidewalk counselors report a regular stream of out-of-state license plates at Illinois abortion clinics," said Scheidler. "In the Chicago area teens come from Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa. In downstate Illinois, minors seeking abortions come from Missouri, Kentucky and Kansas."

"But when something goes wrong at the abortion clinic, as it frequently does, who is going to take care of the young girl?" asked Scheidler. "She should receive advice and counsel from the people who have cared for her all her life."

The Pro-Life Action League specializes in training sidewalk counselors to offer an alternative to women seeking abortions, including teenagers. Working in conjunction with pregnancy resource centers, the League's goal is to protect unborn human life and to save women from the tragic choice of abortion.
