College Students Sacrifice Summer Vacations, Semesters, as Volunteers

Contact: Rachel Elwood, World Gospel Mission, 765-671-7255

MEDIA ADVISORY, May 26 /Christian Newswire/ -- With college classes done for the school year, many students will be turning to summer jobs, traveling, or spending time with family to keep busy until school resumes in the fall. But 34 college students from across the nation will be sacrificing their summer, and beyond, to serve others in Kenya, Hungary, Honduras, Bolivia and Uganda as Volunteers in Action.

One such volunteer is Lizz Bramble, who will be traveling to Kenya where she grew up as a child of missionaries, and where she will work and serve as a short-term missionary. Along with 14 other college students, Lizz and her husband Chris are serving with World Gospel Mission (WGM), an interdenominational missionary-sending organization, as Volunteers in Action (VIA).

"The Volunteers in Action program gives college students and 20-somethings a chance to experience missions for a longer time, from six weeks to a year," said Todd Eckhardt, director of Homeland Ministries at WGM. "They have more time to build relationships and to really dig in to projects and ministries on the mission field."

Bramble will be caring for children in the Africa Gospel Church Baby Center, a home for orphaned or abandoned babies in Kenya. Her husband will be assisting the field treasurer. Other VIA will be teaching English in Hungary, working with children's ministries in Honduras, and teaching in international schools in Bolivia and Uganda, and serving in the Middle East, Argentina, Grenada, Ukraine, and Arizona. WGM is active in 23 areas of the world.

"Going on a VIA trip during a summer or semester can be a life-changing experience," said Eckhardt. "We realize that it's not an easy thing to do at any age, and we're there to help. But we get really excited when we see God working in the hearts of these college students, and seeing their lives change because of these longer trips."

WGM provides training and guidance during preparation and fundraising, and assists potential VIA to find a place of ministry. For more information about the VIA program, visit www.wgm.org/via.
