Maryknoll Receives 29 Catholic Press Association Award - 11 First Place Awards for Maryknoll Magazine, Revista Maryknoll, Orbis Books

MARYKNOLL, N.Y., Aug. 1, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Maryknoll publications -- "Maryknoll" magazine, "Revista Maryknoll" and Orbis Books -- received 29 awards, including 11 first place awards, at the 2012 Catholic Press Association awards competition.

The CPA awards were announced during the organization's annual convention in Indianapolis during June. The Maryknoll magazines and Orbis Books are published by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the foreign mission society of the U.S. Catholic Church.

Maryknoll's magazines received 10 awards, with six presented to the Spanish-language publication "Revista Maryknoll."

"Revista Maryknoll" received the "Best Single Photo -- Color" award (pictured here) in the category of magazines and newsletters and the "General Excellence" award among all Spanish-language publications. "Revista Maryknoll" also claimed first place prizes for "Best Personality Profile" and "Best Lead Article," and second place awards for "Best Cover" and for "Best Feature Story."

"Maryknoll" magazine received second place recognition for "Best Original Poetry" with "Flirting with the truth" by Father Joseph R. Veneroso. The magazine won third place for "Best Interview" for its article about a Maryknoll Sister who recalled her early years in mission in China and subsequent expulsion during the Communist Revolution.

"Maryknoll" magazine also received honorable mentions for "Best Feature Article" and for "Best Web and Print Combination Package."

Among the field of book publishers, Maryknoll's Orbis Books received 19 awards that included seven first place awards. Orbis won in the categories of spirituality, theology, educational books, gender issues, faith and science, biography and first time author (Tom Roberts for The Emerging Catholic Church).

Maryknoll also was represented in an award presented to the New York Archdiocese for its Catholic New York 9/11 tenth anniversary issue. This special issue, which received an honor of general excellence, featured 9/11 first responder and Maryknoll priest Father Raymond J. Nobiletti. The issue also received second place recognition for best one-time special issue.
