On Behalf of Three National Medical Assoc., The Law of Life Project's Attorneys File a 'Friend of the Court' Brief in Support of the First Amendment Rights of New York City Pregnancy Resource Centers

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Jubilee Campaign's Law of Life Project (LOLP) stood firmly behind the rights of New York City pregnancy resource centers to continue their life saving work by filing a friend of the court brief in the case against New York City's unnecessary and unconstitutional requirements to post various notices intended by friends of the abortion industry to confuse, discourage or deter women from receiving the valuable free care and counsel a PRC has to offer. The constitutionality of the law is currently being determined in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit after July 13, 2011 ruling in which a federal court decided the City of New York had overstepped its authority by imposing its unconstitutional and discriminatory regulation against New York City's numerous pregnancy resource centers.

"Pregnancy centers, who voluntarily offer real help and hope to women without charge, shouldn't be and don't need to be told by the government how to care for women," said LOLP's General Counsel Sam Casey. "We filed a 'friend of the court' brief today on behalf of thousands of doctors advising the court that pregnancy centers generally provide valuable, scientifically supportable information regarding the medical risks of induced abortion that is vital for a fully informed decision whether to terminate or continue a pregnancy to term that is not always available from an abortion provider."

In New York City, the City Council attempted to justify their extreme measure by pointing to "investigative reports" published by pro-abortion proponents to argue that PRC's were giving false information regarding the potential health risks of abortion. The Law of Life Project's friend of the court brief, filed on behalf of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, The Catholic Medical Association, and the Christian Medical & Dental Associations, examines the scientific evidence and the informed consent requirements surrounding the links between abortion and future mental and physical health problems explaining why a growing number of states actually require abortion providers to disclose the same information about potential health risks related to induced abortion.
