GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn., Dec. 10, 2014 /Christian Newswire/ -- Robert Bakke is a jet captain, a black belt, a NASCAR driver, author of Amazon's best-selling book, "Prayer at Full Throttle" and clearly understands the need for speed and the desire to fly. "While it is essential that the NTSB determines what caused this crash, there is never an appropriate time to second guess what could have been done differently in a tragedy like this," says Robert Bakke, a private jet captain with over 9,000 hours of flying. "I say that because so often the public, the media and even other pilots try to determine what they would have done differently, but until you're in the cockpit during an emergency, trust me, you have no clue. What's more important now is that we pray for the souls of those who were lost, and for the family members who are suffering in grief."

According to Bakke, bird strikes to airplanes (which are being mentioned as a possible cause in the Maryland accident) are quite common, but rarely ever cause a problem. "For those of us who love to fly, the rewards far outweigh the risks, particularly at the professional level where the flight itself is safer than the drive to the airport," says Bakke, who continues, "factor in the time savings as it relates to business and flying becomes an activity that is hard to resist."
Bakke's enthusiasm cools just a bit when it comes to single-pilot jets. "I understand the manufacture's desire to produce single-pilot jets for the people who can afford to own one, whether they fly it themselves or have it flown with a professional pilot. But the fact remains, when something goes wrong with the aircraft, whether it's a bird strike or anything else (including a medical issue with the pilot), things happen fast and can easily overwhelm the most seasoned pilot. For that reason I wish all jets, whether certificated as a single-pilot jet or not, had a second pilot in the cockpit…just in case."

Robert Bakke has survived three engine failures and numerous other malfunctions, and is the author of the Amazon Best Seller "Prayer at Full Throttle."
