Contact: Beverly Rykerd, 719-481-0537

CAROL STREAM, Ill., Jan. 25 /Christian Newswire/ -- In November 2006, Gayle Haggard's world came crashing in on her. Her husband, Ted Haggard, the founding pastor of 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs and president of the National Association of Evangelicals, was accused of having a three-year homosexual affair with a Denver man and of using illicit drugs. As Ted confessed that part of these allegations were true, everything Gayle held dear was torn from her.

The decisions Gayle made during the initial days following the scandal eventually led to the healing of her marriage, family and her own broken heart. In "Why I Stayed: The Choices I Made in My Darkest Hour" (Jan. 26, 2010/Tyndale), Gayle chronicles her emotional journey and how she survived her severest test. Ted and Gayle Haggard will appear together to discuss the revelations in "Why I Stayed" in a first, exclusive interview on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Tuesday, January 26.

"I realized that everything I believed was being tested," writes Gayle about the night her husband confessed to her. "Now I had to determine if I had the strength to pass the test. Everything I valued was at stake--my marriage, my children, my church and my understanding of God."

In the pages of "Why I Stayed," Gayle takes the reader through a heart-wrenchingly honest, three-year passage filled with highs and lows as she fights for her marriage and restoration with her former church. One of Gayle's biggest heartaches in this crisis was her ordered separation from New Life Church, where she had served as director of women's ministry. The pain of her marital crisis and the parting from her church community sent Gayle on a difficult path that ultimately renewed her passion for the central message of the Bible--the liberating message of forgiveness and love.

"Why I Stayed: The Decisions I Made in My Darkest Hour" becomes available in bookstores everywhere on Tuesday, January 26. For more information, visit www.tyndale.com or www.gaylehaggard.org.
